Chris & Katharine's Guide to the Texas Hill Country

The perfect trip to the Texas Hill Country starts and ends with Texas wine, of course, but there is so much to Hill Country than just amazing wines of all styles. To help you plan your trip out to Hye, Chris and Katharine Brundrett have shared some of their favorites.

Best Breakfast

Emma + Ollie

    • We cannot say enough good things about this place! Owned by our friend Rebecca Rather, Emma + Ollie has the best breakfast and lunch in town. I go back and forth between the Avocado Toast and the Rancho Loma Bowl for breakfast and the kids love the cinnamon rolls + other sweet treats. What's great is that everything at Emma + Ollie is freshly made from scratch. Even if you can’t make breakfast, you can still check out their delicious lunch - or just drop by to pick up a tasty baked good for the road!

    • RATHSKELLER

    • This place has been around FOREVER, or at least since we moved to the area. It’s located in the basement of a two-story limestone building that was built in 1878, and used to be the old town hospital. They serve all three of your daily meals, but we like their breakfast the best. Their Hill Country Duck Hash absolutely cannot be missed.

Fun Spot for a Night Out

  • Albert Ice House

    • This is as close to a neighborhood bar as you can get when you live out in the country. The beer is always ice cold, and you are in for some good stories from the very colorful locals that like to hang around and chat. Check out their website to catch a list of their great live music!

When We're Drinking, But It's Not Wine...

  •
  • Chase's Place

    • This place has it all. Excellent cocktails, incredible food, cool ambience, indoor and outdoor seating. Bonus: It also has chickens! Chase’s Place was opened during the pandemic by our brave friends Tara & Chase Guthrie. Chase was one of our first friends when we moved to Fredericksburg in 2007, and then Tara ran our marketing (and more) for many years. Even if we didn’t have a personal connection, we’d love this place for all of the reasons I listed above. You must go!!

  • DER DAIWEL

    • I have to admit, I’ve never been here… I obviously need to get out sans kids more often 😅. BUT when Chris and I were discussing what we’d recommend people to do that is not wine or food related, this spot was the first thing that popped into his mind! It’s a small bar with really loud rock music - Chris says der Daiwel a must.
